Health care, or healthcare, whichever term you prefer, is the prevention, treatment and management of sickness using the services offered by the medical, nursing and allied health professions. According to The WHO, health care embraces all the goods and facilities designed to promote health, including preventive, curative and palliative interventions, whether directed to individuals or to populations. Collectively, this provision of medical facilities would be known as a health care system.

Before the term health-care became commonplace, English-speakers referred to medicine or to the health sector and spoke of the intervention and prevention of sickness and disease. Even in most developing nations there is a form of healthcare provision for everyone whether they are in a position to pay or not. Established in 1948, The National Health Service in the UK was the world’s first universal health care system provided by administration.

Alternatively a system of compulsory administration funded health insurance with nominal fees can be provided, as with Italy, which, according to The WHO, has the second-best health system in the world. Canada and Australia have both begun similar systems and have been running since almost twenty and the 1970’s respectively both going by the name of Medicare. general health care contrasts to the systems like healthcare in America or South Africa, though South Africa is one of the many nations attempting health care reform. healthcare professionals are dedicated to preventing sickness and disease principally, but also to treat and protect the long term health of their patients.

Over a relatively short period of time, the healthcare industry has become one of the fastest expanding in the world with an average growth rate of just over 10 percent of the gross domestic product of many developed nations and is still growing, playing a huge role in the domestic economies of most nations. The only world nation to differ is The USA with over 15 percent according to figures published in 2003 but it is set to rise to almost twenty percent by the year 2016.

Presently in the The United States over 180 million citizens are looking for healthcare and it will be no surprise to learn that it is top of all concerns for those in and seeking work. The costs of health care in America have risen so much that General Motors had looked at filing bankruptcy due to the increasing health care costs wearing down its auto manufacturing division. It was only after negotiations with the unions to reduce certain health benefits and the subsequent sell off of its poorly performing finance division that stopped the unthinkable from taking place.

In America, the prime concern of workers is their companies healthcare plans, even above their salaries, such is the importance placed on this progressively costly service. One answer is to this international problem is improve the general health and fitness of people generally so that this heavy reliance on medical care can be eased.
