Medical Staff Credentialing: How it Can Reduce Healthcare Costs

We are all very aware that the cost of healthcare is a growing area of concern for a lot of people. And we all have to bear this cost by increased insurance rates and other things. One of the big causes of this increase is malpractice lawsuits against doctors. So if this is such a bit problem, are hospitals doing anything to try to reduce these costs?

One big step that a lot of hospitals have taken is medical staff credentialing. If you’ve never heard of credentialing, here’s the basic idea: before a doctor or physician can perform a procedure in a hospital they have to have the credentials to do so. So basically it’s a way that the hospital can make sure the doctor is really qualified to do what they are trying to do.

So how does medical staff credentialing actually help us besides making sure doctors are qualified? Here are a few ways that it helps you:

The first benefit of credentialing is that it reduces patient injury from malpractice. By keep unqualified doctors from doing procedures it will cut back on mistakes they make.

Secondly, it saves on time and expense of investigations. There is a lot of money lost by taking the time of healthcare professionals to track down what happened and why. If there are less incidents, there is less cost.

There are other reasons why credentialing is a good idea, but those are two of the main ones. And with just these two benefits, if there are any hospitals that are not using a medical staff credentialing system, they really should.

Luckily, there are several companies these days that have developed software to help companies keep track of doctor’s credentials. These software programs save time and improve the efficiency of hospital staff members in keeping track of what doctors should be permitted to do in their facility.

Credentialing may not be the ultimate fix to some of the problems in the healthcare industry, but it is a step in the right direction. As costs continue to rise, it’s good to see that hospitals are taking steps in the right direction to help those costs go down.
