Why More and More Hospitals are Using Credentialing

Recently I learned about a system that hospitals are using to make sure that doctors are actually qualified to do certain procedures. This system or process is called hospital credentialing. Just in case you haven’t heard of it before, let’s go over some of the basics.

What Hospital Credentialing is All About?

So what is hospital credentialing? Basically, it’s a process that doctors have to go through in order to do certain procedures at a hospital. If they don’t have the credentials with that hospital, they can’t do the procedure.

The fact is that hospitals have learned that it takes more than just going to school to be a competent doctor. So hospitals have implemented a credentialing system so that they can be sure to keep tabs on doctors and make sure they are competent in the right areas. The actual process will vary from hospital to hospital, but it usually at least involves peer reviews and other criteria.

Hospitals that use a credentialing system will usually use some sort of software or other system to keep track of who can do what in their hospital. And this is not something that a doctor has to do only once. They have to maintain the credentials over time.

How Credentialing Helps

There is always a risk when you go to a hospital that the doctor isn’t really qualified to do the procedure. This is the cause of a lot of malpractice suits. So that is the first thing that hospital credentialing helps. It helps reduce the costs and injuries associated with malpractice.

This not only helps the patients, but it reduced the money that hospitals have to spend in lawsuits and investigations. So no matter which way you look at it, credentialing is a good thing.

This may be a new thing for you, but in the end hospital credentialing is a very good practice that a lot of hospitals are using these days. It is a step in the right direction to reducing healthcare costs.
