Various Kinds Of Blood Pressure Monitors

Your doctor for one reason or another may want to monitor your blood pressure. This could be for a number of reasons, such as for example, high blood pressure or one of the other related medical conditions. To do this there are several kinds of blood pressure monitors available for you to purchase, but the price and accuracy can vary from one model to another.

One type of monitor that you can purchase is the one we are all familiar with when we make a visit to the doctor’s office. This one is known as the aneroid blood pressure machine. It operates by first wrapping an air bladder around your upper arm and then a stethoscope is placed on top of your arm above the elbow. Your pulse is then listened to and you have to wait for it to fade after the air bladder has been pumped full of air. To take the reading, a dial is attached on the cuff and an arrow points to a measurement when the pulse is first heard and when it was last heard. These two numbers are your blood pressure.

Although the aneroid monitor is difficult to use, it is the cheapest type and it is also very accurate. However, if you have to do a reading with this monitor on yourself, it is especially hard to do. Those that have hearing problems should avoid this type of monitor since being able to listen for the pulse is imperative.

Digital blood pressure monitors are more popular. They are much easier to use. They are accurate unless you have an irregular heart rate. The reading can also be affected if you move while the test is in progress. Digital blood pressure monitors are also more expensive than aneroid monitors.

Digital blood pressure monitors work in the same was as the aneroid monitor. You wrap a bladder around your arm which is connected to a monitor which automatically pumps air into the bladder and releases it. The monitor will provide you with a digital reading of your blood pressure and heart rate.

Those that need to do testing while on the go should consider wrist blood pressure monitors. These are worn on the wrist just as a watch would be, but it allows you the freedom to check blood pressure and heart rate whenever you need to. These are simple to use, because all you have to do is push a button and a few seconds later you will have a digital reading. One advantage of this monitor type is that you can save the reading in order to be able to retrieve it later on. There are even wrist monitor models that will speak and display the results for you. This feature can be useful if you are taking readings while doing something, such as running. On the other hand, wrist blood pressure monitors are more expensive and less accurate than aneroid monitors.

Another type of monitoring device is the finger blood pressure monitor. This is a great choice if you want something small and portable, because these monitors are actually small enough to be held in a hand. They digitally display, save and track readings. However, this type of monitor is also not as accurate as the kinds that take readings from your arm. Using a finger blood pressure monitor is easy, though. All you need to do is insert a finger in the opening of the monitor, push the button and wait a couple of seconds for the reading to show up.

As you can see there are many choices for you when it comes to blood pressure monitors so depending on your needs you can select one. When at home the aneroid or digital monitor should serve your needs but if you are on the go, such as running or jogging, and need to track your blood pressure the wrist or finger monitor would be much more convenient. As a last reminder, your blood pressure done at home or while outdoors needs to be checked and compared to your doctor’s office to monitor them for accuracy.
