You think you know what heath insurance is? You better think again.

Before you can fully understand what insuring your health is all about, you should first understand what insurance is in general. Two main concepts define insurance: risk and probabilities. Having health insurance means that the insurer agrees to assume your risk of incurring serious financial loss due to an accident, illness, bad luck, or other specified means.

But this does not mean that they assume your risks without a price. Each month the insurance provider charges you premiums to help offset the cost of protecting you against this potential financial loss. In other words, an auto insurance provider will pay the thousands of dollars in auto repairs and medical bills incurred when you meet a car accident. In exchange, you will have to pay them the monthly premium.

This system is the same when you have health insurance. You pay a monthly premium when the insurer aggress to assume the financial risks if, for example, you need to undergo a kidney transplant or a long term medical treatment for a certain illness like cancer.

But it’s not as simple as that since there are many types of health insurance depending on the coverage. For example, an individual health insurance requires you to go through a process known as underwriting. Through this, the insurer determines the probabilities of you getting into expensive injury or illness. This process will largely determine whether you should be given a coverage or not, and what the premium would be.

Another thing you should understand about this specific kind of insurance is that your medical expenses are not always 100% covered right away. You would most normally have to fulfill a deductible first. Also, you would be asked to take responsibility for co-pay or the amount of money you should pay yourself or a co-insurance or a percentage of the total cost that you are responsible for each prescription or doctor’s visit.

However, this should not put you down as there are many genuine health insurance plans that do just what they are exactly made to do. They could protect you against major medical financial loss and some even provide financial assistance with smaller expenses. Now that you have a clearer understanding of what health insurance is and how it works for your benefit, the next step you should do is to start shopping for the right insurance coverage you need.
