Medical Tourism - Winning Over First World Countries At Their Own Game

One of the unfortunate realities of our modern time is the number of people who are forced to forego essential or cosmetic medical and dental procedures due to the costs involved. This is a sad state of affairs considering the strides that have been made in recent decades in medicine. The extreme cost and sometimes unacceptable waiting periods in developed countries have given rise to the broad acceptance of medical tourism as an alternative.

Simply put, medical tourism is the global trend of travelling to foreign shores to get medical care at reduced rates or to capitalize on medical skills or procedures not available at home. Listed below are just a few of the world locations that are becoming ever more popular for their affordable, fast and excellent medical treatment.

Mexico has seen a huge amount of development in the area of medicine and in particular medical facilities. Some of Mexico’s new hospitals and clinics are world class, state-of-the-art facilities and many Mexican doctors have more experience in certain procedures, particularly those that are more new and ground breaking, than their American counterparts.

This excellent pricing can literally mean the difference between life and death for persons unable to afford the premiums charged in more traditional locations. A heart valve replacement, for example, will only cost $15,000 in Mexico. This is a tenth of the $150,000 a patient would have to cough up (excuse the pun) in America or Europe.

Staying in South America, Costa Rica is another prime medical tourism destination known for its cost effective and top class treatments. If it’s a face lift you’re after then this is perhaps one of the best places to consider. The price in Costa Rica is a scant $3,000. Impressive when you consider the same operation in the US will put you back in the region of $7,000 to $15,000!

There are no long waiting lists for medical treatments in Costa Rica, post-operative care is outstanding and hospitalization is also cheap. The facilities are all world class and cutting edge procedures are expertly applied by highly qualified and experienced doctors and surgeons. In addition you couldn’t choose a more beautiful country to spend your recovery period in.

Now over to Asia. India counts as one of the most promising new medical tourism destinations and is working hard to build that reputation. Boasting some of the worlds best cancer treatment, neuro and cardiac surgery and organ transplant facilities, India is an excellent choice for offshore medical treatment.

The high standards of Indian hospitals and their staff are complemented by an excellent pricing structure. A shining example is a recent complex heart operation that was undertaken at Chennai’s April Madras Medical Mission. The entire procedure, including a month’s recovery in hospital, cost $8,000 in comparison to the $40,000 a far simpler operation costs in America.

Medical tourism is proving to be the saving grace of many patients that could either not afford the cost or the delay of treatment in their home country. This trend will also certainly bring great benefit to the people of the host nations as a result of the money flowing into tourism and medical infrastructure. So, grab your passport, do some sightseeing and get that nip and tuck you’ve always wanted!
