International Health Insurance Policy For Peaceful Retirement

It is tough times for Americans, especially baby boomers. With most of their savings in social security, rising prices and the uncertainty surrounding the future of social security itself are forcing them to consider other options-such as settling down overseas. When retiring abroad, it is necessary to purchase adequate international travel health insurance.

When you’re planning overseas retirement, you might be tempted to think that since healthcare costs are cheaper in your intended new home, you can afford to pay the costs yourself. However, if you end up paying the bills yourself, the bills may deplete your savings, no matter what currency or rates you use.

If you’re thinking about settling abroad, ask yourself the following questions: Will I be happy outside my comfort zone? Do I like experiencing different things? Do I have few emotional attachments back home, so that I won’t be too homesick? Do I really want to live a better life materially than the one I currently have? If you’ve answered yes, you?re a prime candidate for retirement abroad.

One of the concerns that seniors might have about moving to another country is the availability and cost of healthcare in their proposed new home. However, international health Insurance purchased in the United States can help deal with any medical issues that might arise.

Some people do a “dress rehearsal,” setting up home in the new country for a few months at first, while still maintaining the native home. For this period, international travel health insurance works perfectly. This period can be utilized to check whether the idea is worth pursuing seriously.

Overseas health insurance is available through short-term and long-term plans. If moving to a country, long-term insurance, which covers more comprehensive benefits, is preferable. The insurance can also cover regular check-ups (after a waiting period) and pre-existing conditions (if not excluded after underwriting), which is ideal for living abroad.

One advantage in purchasing U.S.-based health insurance is that most international health insurance plans also feature an emergency evacuation clause, which means that the plan holder will be evacuated to the nearest qualified medical facility that is able to treat the patient’s condition adequately. This can dispel some of the insecurity about living abroad.

When purchasing overseas health insurance, one must consider the reputation of the insurance company, which is published by companies such as A.M. Best. Once that is done and the bags packed, all that remains is enjoying the sunset from the newly bought villa in the city that will henceforth be ‘home’!
