Health care, or healthcare, whichever term you prefer, is the prevention, treatment and management of sickness using the services offered by the medical, nursing and allied health professions. According to The WHO, health care embraces all the goods and facilities designed to promote health, including preventive, curative and palliative interventions, whether directed to individuals or to populations. Collectively, this provision of medical facilities would be known as a health care system.

The expression healthcare has not always been used though and prior to this is it was often just referred to medicine or the health sector but this was utilized more by English speaking countries. Most developed and even developing nations have a system of healthcare for all to cater for those who cannot pay. It was the United Kingdom that pioneered the first population based health care system back in 1948 called The National Health Service run by each successive government.

In Italy, they have a system that works by making everyone pay into a administration funded insurance scheme which The WHO consider the second best health care system in the world. This type of system has been copied to a degree in both Australia and Canada where it is called by the same name of Medicare. Nonetheless, these systems of health care where everyone benefits from a administration based service contrast starkly with those in America where almost all healthcare is paid for through the provision of insurance schemes or privately. The healthcare industry is considered a profession which makes use of the skills of professional health care workers who provide a service related to the preservation or improvement of the health of people who are injured, sick, disabled, or infirm.

Whether you use the phrase healthcare industry or not, it is still one of the quickest growing around the world with an average cost of ten percent of gross domestic product it also plays a large part in the economy of any country. The United States bucks this trend with, back in 2003, a health industry responsible or over fifteen percent of gross domestic product but this is anticipated to rise considerably by 2016 when it will almost one fifth of The United States GDP.

In The United States there are one hundred eighty million Americans who want health care and a recent study showed that it was the number one concern of those seeking work. The steep increases in the healthcare system in America almost contributed to the bankruptcy of the giant car manufacturer General motors. Luckily, negotiations between the Union and GM management made a deal to reduce some of the benefits but keep operating as usual but the were force to sell off their under performing finance arm GMAC.

In America, the prime concern of workers is their companies healthcare plans, even above their salaries, such is the importance placed on this progressively costly service. One answer is to this international problem is improve the general health and fitness of people generally so that this heavy reliance on medical care can be eased.
