Will A Joint Injection Cure Your Knee Pain?
Are you afraid of having a joint injection performed? Do you need one? Is arthritis causing problems in your life?
Arthritis is the name given to inflammation and pain in a joint. The itis bit of the word just means inflamed. Knee arthritis is very common and causes misery for many people.
There are lots of treatment options available - but what can a joint injection offer? And more importantly: are joint injections painful?
But lets start at the beginning. Injections are not always required if you have pain in the joints or muscles. What about trying different options first. You could see if acupuncture or osteopathy worked for you before thinking about having injections done.
Sometimes you will not get help from an injection and might need an operation. Perhaps even a joint replacement in some cases. Take care with joint injections if its possible that you might need surgery in the near future. Some surgeons don’t like to operate within two or three months of an injection being done.
There are several different kinds of joint injection.
Many doctors use a mixture of an anti inflammation steroid drug and some numbing drugs to act as a local anesthetic. Several different steroids can be used, with the most common being Kenalog, Depomedrol or Hydrocortistab.
If you get rid of the inflammation in the joint then you will reduce the level of pain. This is how a steroid injection works.
Other injection options for painful joints include viscosupplements like synvisc or ostenil. These work by lubricating the joint and helping to protect it from further damage or deterioration.
Most joint injections are not painful. A carefully placed treatment by an experienced doctor will only cause mild discomfort and sometimes not even that. Please don’t be concerned or worried.
