How Important Is Healthcare

Health care, or healthcare, whichever expression you prefer, is the prevention, intervention and management of sickness using the facilities offered by the medical, nursing and allied health professions. The World Health Organizations definition is a little different and refers more to the prevention of sickness and facilities to encourage this, in addition to treatment that should be available to a single person as well as a whole population. Collectively, this provision of medical facilities would be known as a health care system.

The English speaking world used to call this subject just medicine or refer to it the health sector which basically meant the same but it was before the term healthcare was coined. Most developed and even developing nations have a system of health care for all to cater for those who cannot pay. Of course the first country wide healthcare service begun in the UK in 1948 and was called The National Health Service being the first to be organized and funded by the government.

Instead a system of compulsory government funded health insurance with nominal fees can be provided, as with Italy, which, according to The World Health Organization, has the second-best health system in the world. Canada and Australia have both started similar systems and have been running since almost twenty and the 1970’s respectively both going by the name of Medicare. All the same, these systems of healthcare where everyone benefits from a administration based service contrast starkly with those in America where almost all health care is paid for through the provision of insurance schemes or privately. A healthcare professional is someone who dedicates their skills to the prevention, treatment and aftercare of disease and illnesses with the intention to preserve and protect life and improve the lives of the disabled or infirm.

Worldwide, over recent decades, there has been a huge increase in the amount of money spent on health care and it is now one of the fastest growing sectors in every developed country with an average cost of 10 percent of the gross domestic product. America has seen some of the biggest rises and the figures in 2006 are anticipated to be the same as 2003 with over 15 percent of GDP - it is presently the biggest in the world but the increase by 2016 is anticipated to be almost 20 percent.

In The United States there are 180 million Americans who want healthcare and a recent study showed that it was the number one worry of those seeking work. The steep rises in the health care system in America almost contributed to the bankruptcy of the giant car manufacturer General motors. Luckily it didn’t happen after some concessions and compromises made with the unions but it does show how something like this can have an effect on even the biggest of companies.

Workers in The United States place this as their number one priority when looking for a prospective employer and often will move to a lower paid position just to better their medical care. Perhaps it is time health care was looked at in a different way and perhaps called health preservation with an accent on fitness and health to ease the need for a top heavy healthcare system which is becoming a international issue.
