Critical care nursing implies a lot more than theoretical training. A talent for quickly analyzing, anticipating problems and constantly reassessing situations, is crucial, as well as a desire to always be the best. If the nurse does not possess all of these abilities along with her nursing skill and experience then a patient may die.

Can nursing be done by anybody?

Nurses must love interacting with their patients and have a great respect and appreciation for the doctors they assist. The list of duties critical care nurses must perform is endless. Nurses need extensive education and the education or knowledge gathering process is never-ending. Just like doctors, nurses need to be aware of all the aspects of their chosen field plus continually keeping updated with the latest changes in their field occurring all the time. Patients, doctors, different staff members, they are all dependent upon a nurse’s proficiency in her job. Nurses in a hospital are like queen bees, always in charge of everyone and everything.

Passion for the profession:

Success in nursing requires dedication to medicine and its object of study, the human body, as well as to the patients and their well-being. Of course the study of anatomy is part of the nurse’s education and if this is not a really fascinating study for the nurse perhaps nursing is the wrong vocation for them. Passion for the people, for the job and the human body is what makes a nurse a very good professional.

What other qualities do nurses need to possess?

It is a known fact that nursing is one of the most significant and challenging careers one can wish for. For a nurse to be truly effective and maintain the ability to evaluate or assess every situation down to the minutest detail, they need to have confidence in their own abilities.

Nurses, especially critical care nurses deal with life and death all the time. Because of this, they will either gain strength of character and self-confidence along with a clear perspective on the value of life, or they will simply break down. A positive attitude will recommend the nurse as a first-rate person and professional not only to her patients and their families and friends, but also to her work colleagues. Nurses, who believe in their own abilities and their intelligence level, possess a healthy pride in themselves.
