Why Does My Stairlift Have A Seatbelt Its Not A Porsche 911
We had a request the other day if we could attend and take a look at a customer’s old aging chairlift and see if it needed renewing. The unit was a very old Stannah 225 and a quick inspection found that the rollers needed replacing and a quick service would put the unit back into action with a good few years still left in the old bugger (Chairlift Not the Client)
The client was more than happy too hear he did not need a new stairlift, but then made a remark that knocked me back a little! Pulling and tugging on the seat belt he exclaimed why the hell has it got a seat belt? It’s not as though it does 0-60 in five seconds.
The stairlift seatbelt is there to ensure the user is securely strapped in whilst travelling on the stair lift. It’s not a gimmick It’s to prevent accidents! Users falling off/out of chairlifts. Unlike when travelling in a motor vehicle it is not compulsory to wear a seat belt when operating a stair lift.
During my many years as a Stairlift Engineer I have been asked to attend customers homes where they alleged they have fallen off/out of their chairlift. Arriving on site and carrying out an inspection of the chairlift and seat belt mechanism to find no faults and all in order I ask a simple question! Were you wearing your seatbelt at the time of the incident.
It’s amazing at some of the answers I get to this question! Some people are unaware their stairlift has a seat belt fitted or others claim they always wear it religiously. Hmm strange not too many signs of wear & tear. You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to tell if someone uses their seatbelt regularly.
Bottom line! If you are wearing your seatbelt as you should be while operating the stairlift then it is imposable to fall off/out of the chair unless of course there is a fault. Hopefully you understand what I’m getting at? If not you is going to open up a tin of worms.
